In 1907, Nathaniel Bowen is the lighthouse keeper at Race Rock, a building in the middle of the ocean off the coast of New London, Connecticut. Believing the remote lighthouse is no place to raise a child, his wife leaves with their son, Caleb. Nathaniel continues on alone. He is visited by a free-spirited young woman, Maddy Covington. A strange box washes up on the rocks of his lighthouse. Both events will have repercussions in the future. On the night of a ferocious winter storm, Bowen fails in his duty and pays the consequences.
A generation later, Caleb has returned to Race Rock as its keeper. On September 21, 1938, his fiancée, Jennifer Hays, visits Race Rock with an ultimatum. A mysterious stranger, Eliot McPherson, also arrives at the lighthouse, his intentions unclear. That afternoon, the worst hurricane in New England history his the area. Caleb, Jennifer and Eliot are trapped on Race Rock. The tension mounts as they battle the storm and their own conflicts. They are also trying to unravel a puzzle created by Caleb’s father that could dramatically change all their lives. All the while, ships at sea in the nightmarish storm are searching for Race Rock’s beacon to guide them to safety.

From the first page I was intrigued. What does a spider getting trapped in tree sap have to do with a lighthouse? The answer turned out to be just one of many story elements that made Todd Gipstein's well crafted, historical, novel so thought provoking. Behind this riveting storyline filled with mystery, agony, hope and the power of love, is a profound intelligence that brings this novel to a different level. It is not just a thriller that keeps you turning the page, but a journey filled with poignant pauses where some little detail suddenly holds great meaning. This is why I think this story is so well crafted. In some ways I felt like I was "reading" a movie. Todd Gipstein has an keenly observant eye and is able to describe scenes so visually it is easy to enter his world. If you like stories about the sea, great storms, and of course lighthouses you are sure to love this tale. Give yourself time to read this in a few sessions because there will come a point where it will be very hard to put it down. I am looking forward to the next novel.Product details

Legacy of the Light edition by Todd Gipstein Todd Gipstein Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I have always been a fan of historical fiction, especially when the story is centered in my area (southeast CT)..
This book tapped into all of my emotions. I was engaged from the beginning. Bravo! I just purchased his next book hoping to be captured again.
Except for getting out of an impossible situation it was an excellent read.
Loved the book. Full of local color and history.
Great job for this first time author. A great novel connecting the history of the lighthouse (in 2 parts). I read this during the hurricaine that just came up the east coast. This really set the tone for the story line. I loved it and could not put it down. Please keep writing Todd!
Very fast paced. The book is so well written, I couldn't read fast enough. Very entertaining, and well worth the time I spent reading it.
Worth the read; Very good book; even for fun being from CT Would and have recommend this book to anyone
