"All the world's a stage" where Ruth Smith resides with her beloved pet, Othello, her long-haired Chihuahua. Ruth, a retired English teacher who lives very happily in the lifecare community called Sunny Acres in Columbia County, Georgia, near Augusta, decides to write a book about the stories that she knows are there behind every door in her upscale community. She will aptly call her book Sunny Acres. Within the pages, Ruth introduces warm, crazy, lovable, and not-so-lovable residents. Biddy Pritchett, for example, is hard to love; she thrives on gossip and boasts of an ancestral tree rooted in Queen Elizabeth I. Then there is the couple who celebrates their sixty-ninth wedding anniversary—still young at heart and in love. The mysterious Muriel Townshend appears by ambulance to convalesce from hip surgery. Muriel shares with Ruth not only her love of books but also the dark tragedy of her childhood. Where there’s laughter, there is Anne Byrd, who may love animals more than people. She and Ruth issue invitations to a mock wake commemorating the loss of Cerberus, a stuffed three-headed dog. And then there’s Chester, who works in Maintenance and is idolized by every resident as well as the community which has honored him for his extensive volunteer services in his off hours. Chester’s life story is so shocking that Ruth questions whether anyone can believe it. Lastly, Ruth falls in love with Richard, an Englishman and a transplant to the deep south who finds the regional drawl and numerous southern idioms confusing and amusing. Ruth will tell all their stories and many more. She writes in the first chapter of her book “Hers will be the story of those who are near the end of life, many facing it heroically and fearlessly. She will handle them gently and touch them with humor and sometimes sadness.” In Sunny Acres Ruth fulfills her purpose as she brings to life the funny, heartwarming stories behind the doors of this lifecare community.

Naomi Williams writes this story as a slice of life. As Ruth, she portrays both narrator and a character in the story. Ruth wants to write a book about the characters that live at the care facility where she lives. The many different types of people can be found be found anywhere. The difference here is that these characters are coming to the end of their lives. She presents the story as events chapter by chapter, but in so doing, weaves the character traits throughout. The ending is quite surprising. I recommend this book for older, better-educated readers, as there are many quotations from Shakespeare and other of the "great writers." However, younger readers may gain an understanding for their older family members' and friends' feelings through reading this book also.Product details

Sunny Acres Naomi Williams 9781469988481 Books Reviews
With her keen literary eye, Naomi Williams has drawn an intriguing picture of people residing at their last earthly address. The reader will find both humor and insight as the residents move forward with their lives while their memories are often drawn back to the ones they led before.
Sunny Acres is a delightful little book that is fun to read and hard to put down. It rather accurately but gently depicts life in a modern retirement home. Residents of Sunny Acres live their lives with gusto in spite of failing health and advancing age. This book makes a very positive statement about life that is skillfully kind yet wickedly funny.
Set at Sunny Acres, a Lifecare Community, Naomi Williams' latest novel offers up a rich cast of characters and a tender portrait of the human condition. In the winter years of their lives, the men and women living at Sunny Acres face love and life, death and illness, and they do so with grace and good humor. Once again, Williams demonstrates her ability to capture a sense of character and place and her merit as a Southern novelist with universal appeal
Book your seat on the Sunny Acres bus for a captivating visit to an exclusive life care community teeming with eccentric, energetic retirees. In this, her third novel, Naomi Williams creates mischief and mayhem--but poignancy and pathos, too--as her protagonist, accompanied by her beloved black Chihuahua, sniffs out the secrets behind the doors of Sunny Acres. The stories they unearth pulse with life, with love, with wisdom and hope and the indomitability of the human spirit.
We get to peer into Naomi Williams' basket of favorite things Shakespeare, flowers, a small black long-haired Chihuahua with a grand name and characters who, whether in her stories or in real life, are multi-faceted and life-affirming, humorous and poignant. And, there is another surprise in the Sunny Acres basket! Once again Ms. Williams reminds her readers that romance, as well as deep, enduring love, are alive and well -- especially in a community of octogenarians! "How beauteous mankind is!"
In Naomi Williams' latest book, Sunny Acres, Ms. Williams presents life in a retirement community in such a vivid, descriptive way that readers will feel as if they are actually visiting Sunny Acres retirement community and sitting on the patio with Ruth Williams and her pet chihuahua, Othello. This book will have readers laughing one minute and wiping tears the next as they explore the diverse experiences and learn life lessons from the residents of Sunny Acres who come to life throughout the stories presented in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and found myself wishing I could read more even though I loved the conclusion.
This charming and moving book pleased me, but I think only those who live in or are contemplating living in a life care community would be interested. The author is a favorite teacher of mine from jr. high school, a fact which also piqued my interest. I hope residents received it in the spirit in which it was written.
